Only a few miles from the lake lies Bagno Regio civita - "The Dying City".
The first view is just stunning. It looks like a film set for Dungeons and Dragons !
There is no way in other than across the pedestrian causeway. The Citadel itself has its own secrets and is a wonderful place to explore, and the beginning of a wonderful walk in the surrounding moonscape countryside.
A memorable day out for all ages! Children most of all.
Only 20 minutes from the Lake, Orvieto sits high on its thrown of Tufa dominating the river valleys below. It is town of classy shops and wonderful buildings and museums. The Cathedral is a special treasure though, with this wonderful facade and elegant interior.
However, what lies on top is only half the story. Take time to explore the caves and shafts underneath the streets and you will enter another world.
It is the only town where you park in the car park and take the lift or funicular railway up to street level!
You may be content to visit the ancient Towns that surround the Lake, but if you can make the trip to see the hill towns of Etruria, Pitigliano, Sovana and San Quirico (pictured) you will see much to enjoy.
These are breathtaking to visit but are surrounded by ancient Etruscan sites. The troglodyte village across the valley from this view is a special treat and a wonderful day out for the family.
